BUY THIS!!!

This is the cover of the new Aveneged Sevenfold cd, City of Evil. It is easily the best CD I have purchased in the last two years. You can find it here at Amazon. You can also get it through the Hopeless Records webstore where I think they have the band's two previous for much cheaper than anywhere else.

I would go into more detail, but I have a great album to listen to over and over and over and over...

The video for "Bat Country" was on MtV2 this AM. I liked it. The vocals had a little of that new System of a Down style sound and the guitar licks seemed vaguely reminiscent of Yngvie Malmstein's pomposity. An interesting combo. The vid itself mixed stripperific T-n-A with grungy weirdness and old school metal ridiculousness (the latter is not a bad thing at all in my book. I love cheesy stuff like Ozzie's "Bark at the Moon" video).

I didn't get up the ouch and bang my head to it, but I still had a great time.

The whole album is filled with moments like that. The track after Bat Country, Trashed and Scattered is a combination of punk gallop and OLD Guns 'N' Roses attitude. I swear the first time I heard that track I thought it was the second coming of Axl, Slash, Izzy, and Duff.

One track has over the top operatic moments mixed with the metal, while another throws in a chunk of acoustic Flamenco guitar near the end.

All in all, this is still the best album I've purchased in two years, but it is not my favorite new band discovery.

THAT honor goes to the band Mastodon whose album Leviathan damn near edged this one out for my new fave. After having picked up back catalogues from both Avenged Sevenfold (A7X) and Mastodon, I have to say that Mastodon is the better overall band. Whereas A7X built their way up from an OK beginning to a great album, Mastodon started out REALLY good and has maintained and improved on that level of quality.

Word of warning though... Cookie Monster vocals do await you if you listen to Mastodon, but I can't get enough of the jazz-fusion drumming that runs throught it all... =P
